Cold press mounting for laminating artwork up to 140cm in width onto card, mountboard, foam board, foamex, aluminium dibond, sheet metal, sheet timbre.Professional documentation of 2D works (typically prints, drawings and paintings) up to 90cm x 70cm in sizeusing flashlights and computer camera control.Colour darkrooms that similarly cater for 35mm up to large format, with prints up to 20” in width.Black and white darkrooms that cater for 35mm up to large format, with prints up to 20” x 24” in size.Equipped with profoto flash units and accessories, backdrops, product table, cubelite and large studio tripod.The Slade maintains several rooms and facilities dedicated to specific Media workflows. The Photo and Media Technicians maintain specialisms in the use of this equipment, and actively support both digital and analogue workflows. Inductions and workshops are regularly run by technicians and academic staff, sometimes with external partners. Other relevant peripherals such as tripods, camera tracking systems, lighting and more.

  • DV/miniDV system for digitising legacy tape media including VHSĪ dedicated loan store facility allows booking of cameras and A/V equipment during term time.
  • Animation stand equipped with Dragonframe software.
  • Dedicated stills film scanners for 35mm, Medium Format and Large Format.
  • Software requirements are regularly reviewed and students have opportunities to feedback to technical and teaching staff through a dedicated ‘Media Users Group’
  • Interactive environment software such as Unreal Engine, Godot, Unity.
  • CAD and 3D Printing software including Autodesk and UltimakerCura.
  • Open source software including micro-controller support and Maker workflows e.g Arduino IDE, Raspberry Pi.

  • All workstations are equipped with HDR, colour-balanced monitors. The Slade maintains several computer suites equipped with high powered Mac and PC workstations. The Slade has a close relationship with UCL Art Museum which is part of UCL Culture. These facilities are open to students across all the studio subject areas of painting, sculpture and fine art media.

    Access to software is explained during New Student Orientation.The Slade has specialist technical workshops and facilities to support teaching and research. Some software is available to all students and some is only available to students in particular programs.
